Captain Marvel: What Does The Ending Really Mean?
6. Monica Rambeau Could Return In The Present Day
Part of the heart of Captain Marvel is the friendship between Carol Danvers and her fellow pilot Maria Rambeau. The two were best friends before Danvers went missing in space, and when they reunite it's Maria and her daughter, Monica, who serve as Carol's tether to Earth and her past life, providing a nice emotional core from then on in.
It's quite possible we could see Maria herself one day in the future, but it feels more likely that if either Rambeau is going to get an increased role, it'll be Monica. In the comics, she's a superhero who goes by a number of different names - Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum, as well as being known as Captain Marvel for a time - and that's something that could easily be explored in a sequel. She's just an 11-year-old girl here, but assuming any follow-up movie jumps to the present day, then she'd be roughly the same age as Danvers, allowing them to develop a new partnership.
Even if it only jumps forward, say, 10-years, she'd still be old enough to be a hero, and Danvers could return and take her under her wing. Either way, it seems unlikely we've seen the last of her in the MCU.
