Aside from playing Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman's biggest success as an actor lay in his ability to bring so many revolutionary historical figures to life. In Marshall, he was tasked with bringing Thurgood Marshall to life in a film detailing one of his earliest court cases.

Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, and Boseman rises to the challenge to honour his legacy and tap into the hardships and strife he faced during the early days of his remarkable career. He is commanding, morally sound and demands attention with every line he delivers.

As an actor's showcase, Marshall is an exceptional feat.

The film does have its issues, of course, including the lack of compelling supporting characters (try as he might, Josh Gad feels woefully out of his element here) and the historical liberties that were taken to give the courtroom drama a more predictable and familiar feel.

All that aside though, Marshall is a stirring experience because of Boseman's empowering lead performance. He holds everything together with composure and decency, and knowing that he's gone only makes his performance more powerful.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
