Child's Play Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

5. Mark Hamill's Terrific Performance As Chucky

Child S Play
United Artists

The one brilliant constant throughout the Child's Play franchise has been Brad Dourif's marvellous voice performance as Chucky, and filling his shoes would prove an absolutely thankless task for any actor.

But casting Mark Hamill as the new Chucky was a sure masterstroke, and while he doesn't quite match or surpass Dourif's iconic work, he's nevertheless one of the new movie's big successes.

Anyone who's ever heard Hamill's voice work as The Joker knows how perfect he is for Chucky, and whether he's voicing a more affable, pre-murder version of the doll in the early going or leaning into the hammy villainy later, he helps carry the film through some of its wonkier moments.

Also, make sure you stick around for the first few minutes of the end credits to hear Hamill singing the deliciously creepy Buddi song. Nightmare fuel indeed.
