Which side does Cap fall on?

Once unfairly described by film critic Camilla Long as "the world's least charismatic actor," Chris Evans has been notoriously hard on himself over the span of his career. "I've made about 20 movies and I€™m probably proud of three," he once stated, highlighting a filmography packed with flops, misfires and ill-judged failures.

It's true that, to date, Evans' time in Hollywood has only really been defined by his on-going stint as Captain America, a role he has played down on a number of occasions... and yet one he has returned to six times in the space of five years.

Here's an actor who admittedly does not care for acting, and would largely prefer to move behind the camera. There is a sense of that in all of Evans' work - the feeling that he'd rather be somewhere else. On screen, his characters tend to fall into two categories: stoic, brooding and very, very serious, or plainly wacky. His good looks have enabled him to play the jock, but he can also do piercing intelligence and wounded pain - there just haven't been all that many opportunities to show it.

Ultimately, Evans makes for a curious case; it's difficult to imagine anyone else as Captain America, but - as an actor outside of those Marvel films - he has little box office draw. Perhaps that's why he ultimately signed the contract - it gave him a guarantee of success. And yet it's hard to escape the feeling that, deep down, there's a great artist waiting to burst free... it's just that the people want Steve Rogers.

To celebrate the release of Captain America: Civil War, here are 5 awesome Chris Evans performances and 5 that sucked...
