Chris Pine in contention to play THE FLASH?

Screen Rant say they've heard through 'the grapevine' that Chris Pine is seriously in the running for WB's quest to find the fastest man alive, D.C. comics speedstar The Flash, their next superhero they hope to introduce to the big screen, probably in 2013. But my knee jerk reaction is that the guy has already bagged the role of Captain Kirk (which he excelled) and will reboot Jack Ryan next year, isn't two franchise gigs the limit for any young actor? I like Pine, but we surely don't want to be in a situation where half a dozen of the same guys continuously play our iconic heroes. Green Lantern writers Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti are currently finishing off their screenplay that's due in December and presumably filming could get underway at the tail end of next year. Guggenheim recently sat down with Newsarama and revealed the first specific details about their script, which is apparently influenced by CSI;
€œWe€™re being true to the whole Barry Allen science police€ We€™re being true to those origins and updating them for the 21st century. I feel like in many ways the movie is three movies in one. It€™s part thriller, that forensic, cool, Seven, Silence of the Lambs; Part superhero movie and part sports movie because there€™s an athleticism to this character that other superheroes don€™t have€ And you get to see how all three of those elements inform each other and make the whole movie even better. It€™s sort of like the way in Green Lantern we took a superhero movie and combined it with a space opera, here we€™re combining the superhero movie with these other two genres and it€™s just a blast.€
On influences;
€œWe€™re drawing I think a lot from a lot of different eras€ Certainly Geoff Johns€™ work has been an influence. Mark Waid€™s run, particularly the stuff he wrote with the philosophy of speed and the philosophy of running has been a big influence. We€™ve also tried to take our inspiration from the old Silver Age Barry Allen stories and imbue it with that sense of fun and wonder while still keeping that cool, slightly darker tone.€
On cameo's (inevitably Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern will turn up);
"And with The Flash I have very particular ideas as to how I would accomplish it € all sorts of other people need to weigh in on that sort of thing before it becomes a reality. I am on record saying I love it when movies do that. I€™m a total sucker for that.€
I would think the writers probably do have a list of potential suitors for the part in mind but who's going to be winning that race? Well for a long time WB were keen on Ryan Reynolds (who I personally thought was the perfect guy to play the part), so keen in fact that they hired him as Green Lantern when that was quicker out of the blocks. Just missing out on the Lantern role were Bradley Cooper, who is getting some attention from his Hangover success that has led to The A-Team gig and presumably more high-profile turns to come AND Justin Timberlake who presumably might be in contention, especially after the added exposure of starring in a probable Oscar contender film in The Social Network. Suddenly the choice of Timberlake for a comic book blockbuster doesn't seem as controversial as it once did (though I still say there are half a dozen other options out there). Looking wider, I would expect Ryan Gosling to have some suitors, Sam Worthington (although attached to Flash Gordon) inevitably, Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy to be there or thereabouts. Then the perennial unlucky runners-up of Scott Cooper and Henry Cavill who seem destined till the end of time to miss out on these comic book gigs. One actor I would be keen on is Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in Star Trek and Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation. Yes two franchises already but as one of them is firmly dead now and with him only playing a supporting gig in the other, I think he could do it. Way back when George Miller was setting up Justice League, Yelchin and The O.C.'s Adam Brody were circling the part. Yelchin I like, and going younger for Flash isn't something I'm adverse to. Everything on The Flash is early days for now, expect momentum to pick up in the new year depending on how keen WB are on that script. Movie is expected in the Summer of 2013, alongside Green Lantern 2.
