Comic Con 2016: 8 Awesome Moments We Need To See
That queue for Hall H better be worth it.
With Star Wars Celebration now wrapped up and not revealing nearly enough, geekdom has turned its expectant gaze over to the 47th annual San Diego Comic Con. This weekend should bring with it a bountiful amount of exciting news and shocking announcements from the major studios.
2016 sees the return of the prodigal son, with Marvel Studios returning to the coveted Hall H after taking a leave of absence in 2015 and it's expected that Kevin Feige and co will bring along some footage from movies currently in production and a hopefully a few surprises too.
It can't be understated how important SDCC is for Warner Brothers. The release of Batman v Superman saw a mixed response from critics and fans alike, but 2017 may be the year that the DC Extended Universe finally explodes with both Wonder Woman and Justice League in various stages of production. Will footage from these films be enough to wash away the bad taste?
Star Trek, Aliens and Dreamworks are also coming to Comic Con in a big way promising announcements galore and there's no doubt that fans are in for some huge surprises this weekend. The past couple of years have been disappointing to say the least, but hopefully 2016 makes the pilgrimage to geek mecca more worthwhile.
What may these surprises be? Read on to see the 8 announcements we need to see at Comic Con....
8. Blomkamps Alien Is Happening
The road to Neil Blomkamp's Alien sequel has been a long and winding one, not unlike that of a Facehugger. Beginning with a concept art reveal on his Instagram all the way back in January 2015, initially the District 9 director was quick to state that these were done without studio input as a personal project. Fast forward a month and Sigourney Weaver had officially signed on to the directors passion project, mentioning that the fifth Alien film was set to ignore the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection, instead taking part in an alternate continuity.
“It’s just as if…the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie…In this case, it picks up, it follows directly the circumstances of Jim Cameron’s Aliens.”
Then along came Ridley Scott and Prometheus 2, now titled Alien Covenant. Twentieth Century Fox put Blomkamp's Alien film on hold at the request of series founder Scott and all that forward momentum crashed to a halt - it seemed like the ongoing adventures of Ripley, Hicks and Newt would have to wait a couple more years....
And then the Aliens: 30th Anniversary panel was announced for Comic Con. Featuring James Cameron, Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn and 'special guests'. There's little doubt the roof would blow off in a hail of pulse rifle fire if they were to announce an official start date for Alien 5 here.
If there's anywhere the we'll see Blomkamp and Weaver on stage together to make an announcement, it will be here.
