Coming Soon, Mark Strong & SHERLOCK HOLMES

When an exclusive is not an exclusive.

A few weeks ago, Thursday 21st August 2008 to be precise, I voiced my absolute shock that the "confirmed" story of Mark Strong's casting in the high profile Guy Ritchie written and directed adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, hadn't hit the headlines.

Ever since Robert Downey Jr. had been cast as the super sleuth detective, I thought the news of who he would be going up against as his arch nemesis would be HUGE news. It wasn't. I don't know if it's because many sites hadn't picked up on it, or maybe it was just down to the ignorance of sites like Coming Soon who didn't want to give smaller sites credit where it was due. . Despite clearly Guy Ritchie confirming the story, Coming Soon gave me this response via e-mail when I told them some days later that their story that no actor had been discussed or lined up for the villain part in Sherlock Holmes was criminally false, I got this response...
Interesting Matt. I hadn't run across that yet. It looks like it originated here, but it does say that Warner Bros. wouldn't confirm; http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a123952/strong-in-line-for-holmes-villain-role.html
If you will notice, that story at The Digital Spy was written by Simon Reynolds, former OWF News Writer. A nice shout out to ya my brother! So that brings me to today, when I log on to Coming Soon, as I do everyday, and they have this as their headline post... Exclusive: Mark Strong Cast in Sherlock Holmes Oh really? An exclusive huh? That exclusive, you are only two fucking weeks behind? And who is their source for the story? Fucking Guy Ritchie himself out promoting his new movie Rock"N"Rolla at the Toronto International Film Festival. I.e. - it came straight from the horses mouth. So I say this to you Coming Soon... do you not need Warner Bros. to confirm this story, or is it just the case that you wanted to spruce up your lackluster interview with the Brit director by slapping on an exclusive tag? Anyhow, great casting choice... but we told you that ages ago.
