20 Movies Critics HATE But Audiences LOVE
3. Practical Magic
Romantic fantasy film Practical Magic remains hugely popular almost 30 years after its release, enough that a sequel was recently shot and is due to hit cinemas this September.
But what might surprise you is that, despite the enduring audience esteem for the film, critics really had their knives - or rather, stakes - out for it on original release.
Practical Magic sits at a terrible 27% on the Tomatometer, many critics taking issue with its jarring tonal shifts and subplots which they perceived as ill-fitting for a frothy studio romance.
But general audiences actually vibed nicely with it, seemingly being enchanted above all else by the undeniably crackling chemistry between leads Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.
Though it actually flopped at the box office on original release, Practical Magic became a cult fave on home video in the years that followed, enough that you'd be forgiven for assuming it was actually well-received by the press.
