Dan Aykroyd: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
4. Ellis Fielding - Loose Cannons! (1990)
Whenever anyone questions the assertion that there is a buddy cop movie for every taste and sensibility, point them towards Loose Cannons! which spices up the premise needlessly with a little Hitler intrigue.
The buddy cop elements are entirely by the book, and in no way terrible. Gene Hackman was born to play perpetually annoyed, grizzled veterans with a teak-tough exterior, and Aykroyd is believable as his dorky, emotionally unstable forensic expert partner. That was enough to sell a film really, but from there it all spirals into ridiculousness.
Aykroyd's character does impersonations - Goofy, Captain Kirk, Roadrunner - when he's uncomfortable, which he inevitably is as their central case involves a porno starring Adolf Hitler. Yep, seriously. It sounds bonkers, but strangely, the pace is laboured, the jokes don't really come and if it weren't for some of his later film choices, you'd think this was easily Aykroyd's most embarrassing professional memory.
