1. Requiem For A Dream

And finally, we come to Aronofsky's very best film to date, the inimitable masterpiece that is his second feature, 2000's jaw-dropping Requiem for a Dream.

An incredibly powerful look at addiction in all its forms, this searing adaptation of Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel lures audiences in with flashy, MTV-style visuals before subjecting them to a horrifying "fall" in the movie's second half.

Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans are fantastic, but the film is easily stolen away by the brilliant Ellen Burstyn, whose heartbreaking performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination (which she absolutely should've won).

You might not want to ever watch it more than once, but from its entrancing style to its brutal emotional impact, there'd be no shame if this was the best thing Aronofsky ever gets to make.
