After Koba is dead, Malcolm has one final meeting with Caesar, to warn him of the impending war, to which Caesar replies that apes have already started the war, and that much like Caesar, Malcolm must now ensure his own clan is safe. They agree that humanity will not forgive the apes for starting the war, and that any chance for a lasting peace has been obliterated, but also agree that they have become friends, before Malcolm leaves to tend to his own family. Caesar then stands tall with the surviving apes as the camera pans into his eyes, reflecting the manner in which the movie opened. Here's a rare example of an ending that managed to be bleak and satisfying at the same time: the war has only just begun, and the entire third movie could simply be War of the Planet of the Apes. The end leaves us hungry to continue Caesar's story, while giving Malcolm a satisfying send-off considering that, like Franco's protagonist, there's probably little reason for him to return for another film. Alas, we'll have to wait and see what Reeves and co. cook up for us next time. What's your take on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes? Let us know in the comments!
