Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Review: 10 Awesome Moments

5. The Tank Shot

One of the most talked-about shots from the movie is the "tank shot", which sees Koba launching himself onto a human-controlled tank, killing the inhabitants and then taking control of the turret, firing wildly while the turret rotates 360 degrees as a camera is attached to it. The shot reportedly took 1030 attempts before WETA's visual effects artists got it right, and considering the complexity of it, who could be surprised at that? The ridiculous amount of detail in the image, as we survey the carnage all around Koba and the tank, is astonishing, and it'll certainly make for an interesting time once the movie hits Blu-ray, and we can sift through it frame-by-frame to truly appreciate the gob-smacking detail in each single image. As if we needed anymore proof that Matt Reeves is one of the most talented blockbuster filmmakers working today, this is it. We can only begin to imagine how he might try to top this with the third film which, yes, he is also committed to directing.
