Deadpool: 5 Worrying Signs From The Trailer

1. Homophobia?

By far the most concerning issue that the trailers have thrown up is sadly not represented in the recently released one, meaning that it will go unchecked. Instead, it can be found in the footage of the extended trailer from Comic-Con. It can certainly be tied in with the toilet humour mentioned previously, but it has far more infantile and offensive potential - the clearly homophobic references throughout. The writers and people that defend the trailer will, no doubt, claim that this is an overreaction by the Political Correctness brigade. They'll point to similar examples in other films and say that anyone finding homophobia in the jokes is looking too hard. Those defences are wrong, and are simply a way of covering up for the fact that the Comic-Con trailer - and, presumably, the full-length film - uses homophobic gags for cheap laughs from college kids. In the Comic-Con trailer, for instance, Deadpool calls Colossus a "c*ck-gobbler". There are many hilarious insults that he could have thrown at a giant mechanical superhero that throws him against a car, and comic book Deadpool would probably have made some witty self-reflexive reference to Colossus' background. Instead, he chucks out a simplistic and infantile reference to how Colossus gives men blowjobs - and how that must be a bad thing, because, y'know, "real" men don't do that. It's typical playground humour, and it panders to a mainstream audience. it shouldn't be there, and stands out like an ugly sore thumb alongside the same sequence's hilarious gag about Negasonic Teenage Warhead's ridiculous monicker. It may be possible to just ignore that homophobic reference, especially given that it's been cut from the final trailer, and regard them as an oversight; an offensive but ultimately standalone mistake. But no, another homophobic joke - which eye-rollingly received legitimising laughter at Comic Con, judging by footage - made it into the Red Band trailer. Blind Al "insults" Deadpool by telling him that "you sound like you have a d*ck in your mouth". Again, the same principles guide the inclusion of this joke. It would be easy to come up with a funny joke about Deadpool's muffled masked voice that didn't involve playing on the "offensive" idea that a man would ever perform a blowjob, but why do that when it's far easier to please teenagers with laughably weak homophobic "gags"? The trailer has many great moments. Lots of blood, a few fourth wall breaking references, a few excellent lines, some impressively-choreographed fight sequences, great costumes on both Deadpool and Colossus, suggestions of plenty of no-holds-barred sex scenes and a brilliantly written teaser trailer that accompanied it... So why do the writers feel the need to pander to homophobic "bros" with jokes about blowjobs and toilet humour, when they clearly have the ability and knowledge of the character to create so much more?
