Despicable Me 3 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. It Does Nothing To Evolve The Series' Formula

Rest assured, this is a Despicable Me movie in the vein of the two that came before it, cut precisely from the same mold and doing little to change things up. To some that may be a comfort, but it does also result in the movie feeling rather samey for the most part, confidently yet complacently working from a greatest hits playbook without bringing any real innovation to the table.

So, yes, the movie plays things incredibly safe, and while some might argue that a movie like this hardly needs to get daring and take risks, it still would've been welcome to see some more ambitious storytelling and characterisation.

Simply, don't be surprised if much of the film's content quickly blurs together in your memory with the two previous movies.
