Detroit Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

4. The Incredible Ensemble Cast

Detroit Film
MGM

Simply put, this film has one of the year's best ensemble casts, and it's all the more impressive because there are as many astonishing performances from little-known actors as there are from name performers.

Will Poulter has understandably earned the lion's share of the praise so far, but as singer Larry Reed, relative newcomer Algee Smith also gives a remarkable performance that damn-near matches him.

Then there's typically reliable work from John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Jason Mitchell, Jack Reynor and John Krasinski, not to mention the litany of small bit-parts from actors you won't necessarily recognise, but will damn sure appreciate.

From the most seemingly insignificant roles to those at the forefront, Bigelow's casting is totally immaculate, and only further contributes to the film's overall feeling of authenticity.
