20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)

8. They/Them

As woefully disappointing movies with incredible titles go, there's little outdoing They/Them - a slasher film in which a group of LGBTQ+ teens face off against a masked killer at a conversion camp.

The concept alone is ripe for psychological unease while offering up some ever-welcome representation in the horror space.

Then throw in Kevin Bacon as the villain and the film being written and directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo) and it could've been huge.

But They/Them was quietly dumped on streaming service Peacock in September 2022 for good reason - it's far less of a slasher film than its title or marketing would suggest, the characters are disappointingly paper-thin, and its handling of its central theme is clumsy-at-best.

Kevin Bacon and Anna Chlumsky are pretty great here, but ultimately this is a sub-Get Out socially-themed quasi-horror film that's not fierce or even basically compelling enough.
