Disney/Fox Merger: 8 Disastrous Implications It Has For The MCU

2. How It Would Affect TV

By far one of the most surprising - and indeed worrying - things about 2017 has been regarding the future of Disney's Marvel TV shows.

What at first looked like a fairly safe and secure environment in Netflix now looks set to be raised to the ground altogether, with Bob Iger et al. moving their Marvel properties to a streaming service of their own make, along with Pixar, Star Wars and the rest.

Apart from the sheer fact that, y'know, audiences are sick of subscribing to more streaming services as it is, Disney's designs on TV would further place Fox's own series in jeopardy. That means Gotham, a DC work, could get scrapped - as could Lucifer - but also that The Gifted and Legion could leave as well. We still don't know what'll be permitted on this new streaming service, or even if any new Marvel characters are in line for a series either, and while it's likely to provoke a massive restructuring of Disney's small-screen projects regardless, the departure of Fox's shows would be a massive shame for all concerned.

The rise of the studio's X-Men TV series have largely paralleled that of their big-screen counterparts, and while Legion or The Gifted are yet to pick up an audience as big as S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil or the rest, they exemplify the talent currently residing at the network. To lose them would be a real tragedy.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
