1. Revolutionary Road (2008)
Somewhat overshadowed by what became The Award season of Kate Winslet, Leo earned a nomination for a Golden Globe but no best actor nod for his display in a film about a couple struggling in suburbia. If you compare Revolutionary Road with Sam Mendes other piece about torturous suburbia, American Beauty, which won best picture and best actor, Revolutionary Road should have swept the board. The performances between the two leads were equally strong in showing the build, the crash, the build and the crash again in a deeply intimate and emotional film that moved audiences everywhere. Kate Winslet stole all the headlines by winning a Golden Globe for this performance and an Oscar for The Reader. The furore surrounding her probably didnt help Leos campaign even though his performance was as strong, doing the rare thing of putting the mans problems in 40s suburbia on an even level with a womans. It was earnest and talented, and in fitting with the movie both Kate and Leo should have celebrated wins that year. Sean Penn won Best Actor that year and Heath Ledger won for Best Supporting Actor, the two categories he could have been considered in. Do you agree with these decisions? Do you think his snubs are justified? Comment below.
