Doctor Sleep Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's A Totally Worthy "Sequel" To The Shining

Though it feels slightly weird to call Doctor Sleep a sequel to The Shining given that so much of it is so thoroughly divorced from the events of that movie, Flanagan has absolutely made a film that feels consistent with it stylistically, thematically and character-wise.

It is an unenviable task for any filmmaker, to live up to such a towering cinematic legacy, and while few will proclaim Doctor Sleep to stand tall alongside The Shining, it is nevertheless a welcome addendum to Danny Torrance's story.

Don't go in expecting a mile-a-minute scare-fest or a film as richly taut as the original, but it certainly does enough to feel worthy of belonging in the same wheelhouse.
