Doctor Sleep Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

7. Ewan McGregor's Fantastic Performance

Doctor Sleep Ewan McGregor
Warner Bros.

Ewan McGregor adds another cracker of a performance to his under-appreciated catchet, proving spectacularly well-cast as an adult Danny Torrance throughout.

Perhaps the one major benefit of the lengthy runtime is that it doesn't force McGregor to be in every single scene: he's actually absent from a few fairly long stretches of the movie, but every time he's present, he knocks it out of the park.

It's a restrained performance that isn't very showy at all, but Flanagan allows McGregor to deepen the emotional well of Danny's character arc with some wonderfully human, poignant moments - especially when he's comforting some dying patients in a hospital - long before the inevitable chaos transpires.

His chemistry with young co-star Kyliegh Curran, who plays the shining-bearing Abra, is terrific and drives most of the movie, and considering how much affection fans have for this character, it's safe to say that McGregor gives him a dignified and sensibly restrained adult portrayal.
