Doctor Sleep Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. Rebecca Ferguson's Sublimely Creepy Antagonist

Doctor Sleep Rebecca Ferguson
Warner Bros.

Though Rebecca Ferguson's villainous Rose the Hat feels a tad underdeveloped as a character, Ferguson's imposing screen presence nevertheless does a fantastic job compensating for that.

Her slightly iffy Irish accent be-damned, Ferguson otherwise makes for an intensely unsettling villain, desperate to consume the shine of children, and because prolonged torture makes the shine more potent for her and her cronies to subsist on, she doesn't hurry putting her victims out of their misery.

But Ferguson's charm and sex appeal also makes Rose a delightfully seductive and fun baddie, especially during her inevitable third-act showdown with our heroes.

While audiences will likely be wishing they knew more about Rose by the time the end credits roll, Ferguson takes a potentially cartoonish, comical character and makes her dynamic and unpredictable.
