Doctor Strange: 11 Giant Questions It Leaves Unanswered
6. Does The Cloak Of Levitation Have Its Own Consciousness?
The Question: When Strange comes across the Cloak of Levitation, it helps him out by attacking his enemies and pointing him towards the magical armour that traps Kaecilius. Is it merely reflecting Strange's will (as in the comics), or is this version of the Cloak sentient?
The Likely Answer: Don't expect this one to get a concrete answer any time soon, but it'll probably be some mixture of the two possibilities. The Cloak can be influenced by Strange's own thoughts (even unconscious ones that his brain has noticed but not acted upon, such as seeing the magic armour in the room), but it likely has some sort of will by itself, as suggested by Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige saying "It’s almost got a consciousness of its own".
The idea of Strange and the Cloak occasionally disagreeing also has too much comic potential not to exploit in future movies, though this could admittedly still be achieved by having Strange at war with his own subconscious thoughts if they don't want the Cloak to be sentient.
