18. Surprise! Wanda Is The Main Villain

The marketing for Multiverse of Madness seemed to be playing it coy with the identity of its outright villain, for though the trailers implied Wanda would start the movie as a tortured anti-hero-type character, it seemed likely she would eventually team up with Strange and company to fight a bigger threat.

Shockingly enough this never actually happens and Wanda is indeed the primarily villain for effectively the entire movie.

As we learn soon enough, Wanda has been corrupted by the power of the Darkhold book, which has convinced her to capture America in order to use her powers to reunite with Billy and Tommy, the children she created during the events of WandaVision.

While Wanda's "I'm a mother! I want my children back!" motive isn't particularly interesting or forward-thinking for a female superhero in 2022, the film deserves a measure of credit for committing fully to Wanda's villainy and not ass-pulling a sentimental redemption arc in act three.

The point of no return for Wanda is made clear when, shortly after Strange visits her, she heads to Kamar-Taj and massacres many of the sorcerers there while pursuing America.
