Doctor Strange Review: 8 Ups & 5 Downs
5. Mordo Will Be A Compelling Villain
To get it out of the way, Kaecilius is not the greatest Marvel villain going: he's a bit of a mook elevated to the important role of vessel to an even bigger threat, but there's a sort of silent slasher movie monster spirit about him that works well for the film's requirements.
He's not the only villain on show of course, and as well as his boss we get the introduction of Karl Mordo, who initially starts as an ally to Strange. By the end of the film, his allegiance has flipped, and while he's not the same sort of villain as Kaecilius, he looks very compelling.
He's basically going to be a policing antagonist, reacting to what he sees as the over-reaching behaviour of the Sorcerors and protecting the Natural Laws. That instantly gives him a different level of complexity to any other MCU villain seeking personal gain or power: and while he's another mirror image villain, Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance was more than strong enough to suggest there are even better things to come.
