Doctor Strange Reviews: 10 Big Things We Learned

9. ...But Still Manages To Stand Alone

The worst offerings of the MCU tend to be the films that pack in too much of what's to come, forgetting to tell their own individual story. Iron Man 2 is the worst offender of this and as a result the quality greatly suffers. Thankfully it seems as if Doctor Strange is not this way inclined and actually manages to stand on its own...where it counts anyway.

DenofGeek make this very clear claiming that "...Doctor Strange is the first Marvel movie in a while that feels like its own thing". The shared universe concept is the MCU's shtick but knowing that we are still going to get some films that can carry themselves is a very positive sign.

The fact that the film is strong even without the further universe connections is echoed by David Ehrlich at Indiewire who increases the anticipation for the film even more saying that "this is the most exciting addition to their ever-expanding universe since “The Avengers.” No doubt the lack of contrived links adds to this.

This could well be an indication that Marvel are steadily changing things for the better and it is good to know that Doctor Strange can cast its own brand of Marvel magic without having to rely on everyone else.
