Dumbo Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Pink Elephants Scene Is Massively Disappointing

If you were hoping that the new Dumbo would lovingly recreate the original film's iconic - and, let's be honest, infamous - pink elephants scene, you'll be disappointed to learn that Burton's version hugely tones down everything about it.

While the original film saw Dumbo get accidentally drunk and envision a psychedelic troop of elephants on parade, here the sequence is much briefer and limited to Dumbo simply witnessing the parade through bubbles being blown into the air at the circus.

Clearly Disney were a little nervous about having a baby elephant get wasted in their big-budget 2019 blockbuster, but it's certainly not a "problematic" element of the original film, and one which is wholly justified by the artistry of the hallucination sequence.

Considering the brilliant nightmare Burton could've achieved, stripping the scene so toothlessly of its personality feels like a colossally missed opportunity.
