Dune Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

3. Hans Zimmer's Fantastic Musical Score

Dune Rebecca Ferguson
Warner Bros.

Scoring Dune was a dream project for the legendary Hans Zimmer, enough that he even turned down scoring his regular collaborator Christopher Nolan's Tenet to do it.

The result is, predictably, spectacularly bombastic, and one of Zimmer's most dynamic and original scores in years.

Zimmer's soundscape includes goosebump-raising choral chants, epic drumming, synths, and even bagpipes, ensuring this isn't one of Zimmer's less-than phoned-in scores but clearly something made from a place of real passion and commitment.

Zimmer's work accentuates Dune's generally otherworldly feel, delivering a score that moves far away from the conventions of typical blockbusters scores for something more unexpected and exciting.

Zimmer is absolutely a lock for a Best Original Score Oscar nomination, and he could even win it outright.
