Following on from that awesome image is an altogether more haunting one: Tommy is submerged underwater and eventually places his hands over his ears, presumably to mask them from the intense noise of the bombing, even underwater.

Alternatively, maybe that's just his exasperation at being forced into the sea because his ride home got blown up. Who knows?
