Edgar Wright Crawls Forward With ANT-MAN Movie
With the world wide promotional press duties almost taken care of for Scott Pilgrim, Brit director Edgar Wright has been speaking once again about picking up work on writing a second draft of his long awaited Ant-Man script with his TinTin co-writing buddy Joe Cornish. This will be the first time in two years that he has put pen to paper on the Marvel project, which he paused during his time on Pilgrim. In an interview with the LA Times blog 24 Frames he says;
"This one's not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script...It's slightly different than that."...Meaning that the pressure is off to make a superhero movie that is less of a risk, light hearted and offbeat. Something the Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim director is an old hand at. This follows on from his comments back in June 2010;
"The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it's within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we've all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different."In case you are unaware of Ant-Man's comic book roots, here is a brief origin of the character; After discovering a size-altering chemical substance, biophysicist and nanotechnology expert Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym decides to become a superhero. Armed with a helmet that could control ants, Pym would shrink down to the size of an insect to become the mystery-solving Ant-Man. He soon shared his discovery with his girlfriend Janet Van Dyke who became his crime-fighting partner 'The Wasp.' With the right casting, names rumoured in the past include Adrien BrodyAlan Tudyk and fanboy favourite for every role Nathan Fillion, this could be a little gem in the making. Wright and Cornish are definitely the ones to make the material buzz with humour and excitement on the big screen. Lets hope that people's 'Pilgrim Prejudice' doesn't put them off checking this one out when it finally reaches our screens. Oh... and as a side note - Wright made small mention about having just come from a meeting with Marvel Head Honcho Kevin Feige. I wonder if conversation turned to the subject of the vacant Iron Man director's chair...
