Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

The World's End - Triffid A further inspiration for the film was John Wyndham€™s Day Of The Triffids, as Wright and Pegg explained in an interview with Empire Magazine, citing their film as a €˜social science fiction€™ much in the same vein as Wyndham€™s plant-monster invasion tale. Of course, it€™s not hard to see the parallels between the two stories if you compare them €“ both are concerned with the destruction of Earth by an alien menace who use humanity for plant nutrients. The only difference appears to be that while the Triffids were overtly hostile, The Network appear to be inadvertently mulching most of humanity due to their inability to recognise humanity as far too idiotic to be taken into a federation of galaxies.
