Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

ssss Every director/writer worth their salt should attempt to reference their mum in their work, and Wright rose to the challenge gamely, and in a subtle way. Throughout the film, we hear Barbara€™s nickname for her son is Pickle €“ this is a reference to Wright€™s own childhood, where his mum referred to him by the same moniker when he was young. It€™s also a term of endearment used in Spaced. Another €˜mother€™ who gets a nod in the film is Frost€™s mother-in-law, who plays one of the Winchester€™s regular drinkers. She€™s the one Frost€™s Ed refers to as a €˜cockicidal maniac€™ and a pioneer of €˜café au lait€™ porn. Apparently, Pegg€™s laugh in this scene wasn€™t scripted €“ Frost was allowed to improvise, and had his friend in stitches over the comments.
