Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Island Bad Boys References to Michael Bay€™s €˜opus€™ Bad Boys 2 are thick on the ground in Hot Fuzz and are mostly pretty well telegraphed €“ see the Martin Lawrence €˜Frank, this sh*t just got real€™ take-off and the spinning-camera conversations between the main pair in the final act for proof. However, there are also references to other films from the explosion master, namely The Island, the Ewan MacGregor-Scarlett Johansson clone escape movie. The line Dr. Hatcher says to Danny €“€˜I brought you into this world Danny, seems rather fitting I'll be the one to take you out of it€™ is paraphrased from a line Sean Bean scientist Dr. Merrick says before he attempts to choke Ewan McGregor€™s clone to death. This being Sean Bean, he looks as if he is about to win before being shot through the neck with a grappling hook and being hung to death. The parallels with Dr. Hatcher are uncanny €“ they€™re both doctors, they both look like they€™re about to win and they both get foiled by a shooting. Plus, the shooting also echoes well with Danny shooting Hatcher with an airgun at the fair, which is itself a reference to Ed from Shaun of the Dead, who once boasted he shot his sister in the leg with an air rifle. Granted, Dr. Hatcher isn€™t Danny€™s sister, but you can€™t fail to see the resemblance.
