Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Straw Dogs Shaun of the Dead isn€™t the only Wright film to reference Straw Dogs €“ Hot Fuzz gets involved too, in a far less subtle way. Of course, you do have Greg, who played a cadaver in the Peckinpah classic, but there€™s also something else which evokes memories of the film. That something is the bar shootout sequence, coincidentally hinted at in the board€™s two-for-one shooters offer. While the landlord and lady Roy and Mary Porter are shooting at Nick and Danny, Nick suddenly gets the idea to shoot the bear trap above the bar. It duly comes down on Roy and shuts on his neck. It€™s violent, brutal and stands out even among the ridiculousness of the Sandford shootout, and is a direct homage to David in Straw Dogs, who kills an intruder in a similar manner. The character of Mr Treacher is also a reference to Straw Dogs €“ namely, the novel upon which it€™s based, €˜The Siege of Treacher Farm.€™
