Encanto Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
5. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Catchy Songs
While Encanto's best original songs probably won't end up as iconic bangers on the level of Disney's finest, this is another solid effort from songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose signature creative stamp is all over these catchy tunes.
Picking a single standout is difficult, but some of the stronger tracks include "Surface Pressure" (when Luisa sings about her stress and anxiety), the hilariously self-explanatory "We Don't Talk About Bruno," and the fantastic "Dos Oruguitas," which plays during the film's most emotional sequence.
That's not to ignore the sublime bookending earworms "The Family Madrigal" and "Colombia, Mi Encanto," ensuring the soundtrack boasts a diverse mix of breezy toe-tappers and more thoughtful songs.
It's easy to imagine any of these songs ending up with a Best Original Song Oscar nomination next year, really.
