2. Orson Scott Card Hasn't Wrote The Script
In a Q&A at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC , Orson Scott Card revealed that for a long time he believed that his book was, for the most part, "unfilmable". He spent most of the 80's and 90's turning down film studios' offers to adapt his novel into a film. He even started his own production company (Fresco Taleswapper Studios) in 1996, just so he could write the screenplay himself and block anyone else from messing with his baby. These are not the actions of someone who is careless with their intellectual property. Which makes it even more surprising that Card would be fine with Gavin Hood writing a brand new screenplay for the movie that is released later this month. "The screenplay you see on the screen was 100 percent Gavin Hood," he revealed in an interview with the BYU Universe. "None of my writing was used. That was the decision that Odd Lot and Summit made; it was their money at risk, and they invested in the writer they believed in. I have no complaints." Handing over complete creative control of your magnum opus is a pretty big show of faith, both in the film, and the director. If someone who is as protective of his IP as Orson Scott card is willing to do that, shouldn't it be the only endorsement fans need?
