2. Hugh Jackman
Probably one of the most versatile actors today, Hugh Jackman has already proven he can make a dark, dangerous character relatable to mainstream audiences (See: Wolverine.) With an Oscar nomination and numerous multi-million dollar hits on his resume, he has his pick of movie roles these days so you know that if he signed on for Escape from New York, it's because it's something he would want. Making an animalistic superhero
human is not an easy thing to do and while I would not want to see Snake Plissken cry on screen, it wouldn't hurt to show some feeling or range of emotion that could put the audience into Plissken's shoes during a climactic moment. Jackan could deliver that in spades.
1. Josh Brolin
There simply is no other living actor who could replace Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken better than Josh Brolin. The look, the voice, the demeanor, the sheer presence, it's all there. Watch any number of his films over the years and you can see how the pieces fit. Even in bombs like Jonah Hex, his world weary nature and badass attitude were enough to make that film watchable. This is a key attribute of a great actor, one who can overcome a bad script, bad direction, etc and STILL give a great performance. Brolin has been building up to this his entire career (his role in the upcoming "Sin City" sequel will cement his stature in movie geek circles I think as THE go-to guy.) He deserves his own franchise, one that he can both pay tribute to and make his own (which he was able to do with "Men in Black III" as the young Agent K/Tommy Lee Jones.) Much like James Bond is uniquely British, Snake Plissken is an iconic American character and ultimately should be played by one. An outlaw with a take-no-crap, can-d0 attitude. Multidimensional, layered, tough, ruggedly handsome, talented. Josh Brolin is all those things and more. He was born to be Plissken (or you can just call him "Snake.")
