Eternals: 24 WTF Moments
15. All The DC References
It goes without saying that superhero movie universes generally try to avoid referencing other ones. After all, why give the competition free publicity?
Well, the MCU is such a monolithic entity at this point that the same rules don't really apply to them. And so, Eternals contains not one but two distinct references to DC Comics characters.
For starters, Gilgamesh (Don Lee) says that Karun is to Kingo as Alfred is to Batman, and later on, Phastos' son Jack (Esai Daniel Cross) says when he meets Ikaris, "Dad, I saw him on TV with a cape shooting laser beams!"
This prompts Ikaris to tell him he doesn't wear a cape, but Phastos nevertheless mockingly calls him "Clark."
Beyond the fact that this basically confirms Batman and Superman exist in the MCU, it's so jarring - in a cool way, admittedly - to hear such prominent "competing" superheroes mentioned in a Marvel movie.
