Eternals: 24 WTF Moments
9. The MCU Gets Its First Openly Gay Superhero (And Kiss!)
The MCU has been quite rightly criticised in recent years for its frustrating lack of LGBTQ+ representation, with the perception being that Disney doesn't want to risk upsetting "less tolerant" - that is, bigoted - markets by including content they may find objectionable.
As such, we've all spent years listening to actors insisting their MCU characters are gay or bi, but seeing little-to-no evidence of it on screen.
Well, the streak has finally been decisively broken in Eternals, which positions Phastos as its first openly gay superhero, with numerous scenes focusing on him living with his husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman).
We even get a close up shot of Phastos and Ben kissing before he heads off on a mission, and while this all could theoretically be cut down for international markets, in a surprisingly laudable move Disney has actually refused to cut any Phastos-related content, opting for the film to be "banned" in those regions instead.
Hopefully this is only a sign of more progressive and inclusive characters to come in the future. It's a start, even though it shouldn't have taken this long.
