Eternals Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The Lack Of "MCU Humour"

As much as we've all grown tired of that "Fall Collection, IKEA" joke from the film's trailers, that's really as typical as the film's "MCU humour" actually gets.

For the most part Eternals does a respectable job of toeing the tonal line - taking itself and its mythology seriously and not punctuating each and every serious moment with a goofy one-liner.

Sure, there is still enough humour - largely by way of the wise-cracking Kingo - but one suspects Zhao's more serious-minded filmmaking sensibilities were instrumental in ensuring the dramatic moments were given room to breathe here.

It's funny enough when it needs to be, but clearly doesn't feel the urge to accompany its more straight-laced moments with a slew of daft gags to lighten the mood.
