Ethan Hawke: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Jake Hoyt - Training Day

Training Day Hawke's turn as LAPD Officer Jake Hoyt was a breath of fresh air for the actor, making it clear that he was able to convince as a gun-toting character in an action movie, even if the point of the movie is that he's the good guy who's a fish out of water. Though Denzel Washington steals the show with his Oscar-winning portraytal of tyrannical, corrupt Detective Alonzo Harris, many forget that Hawke also received an Oscar nomination for his superb work here, with each actor functioning as well as they do because they had such a starkly contrasted actor to play opposite. Hawke's genius here is in slowly portraying the shift of his character's mindset; he begins the day as an optimistic, wet behind the ears cop, and by the end of it, has been so thoroughly brutalised and bashed over the head with the infrastructure's toxicity, that he comes out of it a seasoned pro.
