Nominations: 1 - Best Visual Effects

Though this superhero sequel doesn't quite reach the deliriously inventive highs of its predecessor, it is an absolutely rock solid follow-up all the same, again training the focus on its charming characters, surreal visuals and frothy action sequences.

Kurt Russell's Ego is an effortlessly superior villain to the original's Ronan and there's a greater focus on an actual plot this time, even if the film's charms, humour and use of music feel a little over-familiar and comfortable at times.

Still, James Gunn did nothing but reinforce the Guardians as a hit staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while sewing some intriguing seeds for the inevitable Vol. 3.
