Every Best Actor Oscar Movie Winner Of The 21st Century Ranked

20. Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant (2015)

Capote Philip Seymour Hoffman
Regency Enterprises

Who should have won: Matt Damon - The Martian.

This ranking will surely be controversial, but the truth is that his role in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s period revenge drama The Revenant probably doesn't even crack Leonardo DiCaprio's top ten.

He definitely deserves credit for how much preparation he put into the role - eating raw meat, travelling perilous terrain, and almost catching hypothermia - but DiCaprio's portrayal of vengeful frontiersman Hugh Glass doesn't come together as the complex performance it could have.

There's a lot of groaning and scenes that are hard to watch without respecting his obvious passion, but DiCaprio's work here feels far too showy and even desperate in parts. Looking back, he clearly only won because he somehow hadn't yet.
