77. Out Of Africa (1985)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Universal Pictures

Out of Africa is the kind of award darling Hollywood bred so well in the 80s and 90s, featuring a doomed love story, two peak movie stars, and luminous scenery that’s often brought in to cover up the fact the central tale isn’t as competent as maybe it could be.

Sydney Pollack’s vision is sweeping and old-fashioned, a tear-jerking epic that, unfortunately, isn’t all that exciting. Meryl Streep’s sure having fun, and the imagery sings, but the film’s ponderous execution eventually suffocates it.
