Every Billion Dollar Comic Book Movie Ranked Worst To Best
3. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Box Office: $1,153,304,495
It might not be the purest adaptation of Marvel's seminal comic book event, but Civil War was still a stunning achievement that took all of the challenges of The Avengers and dialled them up another notch. And considering how big it all was, the fact that it focuses so tightly on such a personal, emotional story was inspired.
That the Russos managed to balance something as huge as superhero registration (and all of the allegorical stuff for governmental control, the surveillance state and simple accountability) with a personal tale of vengeance and broken lives involving just three men is still very impressive. One of those things would change the world of superheroes forever, but the other was played as the bigger, more devastating concern.
And even with that split focus, the directors still managed to bring in Spider-Man, Black Panther and Giant Man. It's a triumph of restrained, clever film-making.
