Every Billion Dollar Comic Book Movie Ranked Worst To Best

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight only just sneaked into the billion dollar bracket, but it remains the best of the lot, even if it's far removed from the idea of a comic book movie in the traditional sense.

Christopher Nolan chose to make an action movie starring Batman and the Joker rather than a Batman and the Joker movie with lots of action and that's a very key distinction. Rather than feeling pressured to tie himself to the source material, Nolan cut free of the Gotham of the comics and made something more in his own image and the result was stunning.

The film will forever be marked by the tragedy of Heath Ledger, but it is so much more than just his film: Christian Bale is great and the rest of the supporting cast are just as good and all-in-all, it's a sensational escalation of what was seeded in Batman Begins. Will it ever be toppled as the best comic book movie ever? Let's hope so, but it's difficult to fathom how.
