Every Coen Brothers Movie Ranked Worst To Best

16. Intolerable Cruelty (2003)

Inside Llewyn Davis
Universal

The most unfairly maligned of the Coen Brothers' films, Intolerable Cruelty is, despite its lukewarm reception, a solid slice of rom-com entertainment, complete with two affecting performances from Catherine Zeta-Jones and frequent Coen Brothers collaborator George Clooney.

The film follows Miles Massey (Clooney), a divorce lawyer so successful his famous prenuptial agreement has never been cracked. He's as high-profile as he is cut-throat, but that all changes when he falls in love with his latest client's soon-to-be-ex-wife, Marilyn (Zeta-Jones), a gold digger of the highest order.

Both Clooney and Zeta-Jones are on top form as the pair, trading wits and working off one another beautifully. The film also features a few entertaining supporting turns from the likes of Richard Jenkins, Geoffrey Rush and Julia Duffy, and a stellar, whip-smart script which makes it stand out as a strong romantic comedy.

The main issue with Intolerable Cruelty is how safe it plays things. This is a film lacking the usual twists and turns of the Coen Brothers' best works, and sticks to the typical rom-com formula rather than putting their own daring spin on the proceedings. Still, it's a solid slice of romantic fun. It's just not as risky as the pairs' other movies.
