Every David Fincher Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

9. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Nominated for 13 Oscars including Fincher's first Best Director nod, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the closest thing the director has ever made to a conventional blockbuster movie - which is to say, it's still anything but.

In sharp contrast to the more walled-off, bleak tone that defines most of his filmography, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a fantastical crowd-pleaser - and Fincher's first PG-13 movie - following the life and times of the titular man (Brad Pitt) who ages in reverse.

Though Eric Roth's screenplay cribs perhaps a little too eagerly from his own Forrest Gump template and its 166-minute runtime gets close to being punishing, this is nevertheless a visually sublime, superbly acted fantasy-drama.

As a full-hearted meditation on life, love, death, and the passage of time, it's a totally unique film both in its genre and within Fincher's own canon - the closest he's ever gotten to making you cry, surely.
