Every David Fincher Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

6. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Gone Girl Rosamund Pike
Paramount Pictures

This movie is very much a curious case for Mr Fincher, which can be argued as either his most daring or most safe movie as a director. The premise of a man who continues to look younger as he ages is a little gimmicky, but Fincher does his best to make the film a blockbuster film for the ages. While many found the self seriousness and extreme running time a bit much, there were just as many who felt this was Fincher's finest moment.

Any flaws that the film does have is largely eradicated thanks to the brilliant acting of Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, who find themselves heading in the opposite direction in terms of their ageing. There is a real sense of growing maturity and world weariness from our protagonists, as they come to appreciate what really matters in life and the inevitability of time.

The cinematography is up to Fincher's normal high standards, perfectly fusing CGI effects to signify Benjamin's de-ageing within the various contexts that the film transitions through. Fincher's ability to make the seamless transition from authentic looking war scenes to the romance eras of the 50's and 60's is a highlight, and help us invest in this timeless romance. Overall the film is another strong Fincher offering, and while he may not perfect the Romance genre, he does give it a really good shake.
