Every David Lynch Film RANKED From Worst To Best

5. Wild at Heart

Twin Peaks Criterion
The Samuel Goldwyn Company

This sexually charged surrealistic road trip sees Laura Dern and Nicholas Cage as star-crossed lovers on the run from their pasts. Lynch's Palme D'Or winner is one of his most entertaining romps.

Adapted from a novel by Barry Gifford, the film sees Nicholas Cage's Sailor and Laura Dern's Lula hit the road, trying to escape Lula's domineering mother (Diane Ladd, in an Oscar nominated turn) and the various gangsters and underworld figures she's hired to hunt them down. With Elvis and The Wizard of Oz regularly cropping up, as well as surrealistic digressions (one particularly striking scene when Sailor and Lula happen upon the aftermath of a car crash comes to mind), Wild at Heart is an unforgettable ride.

And yet, despite all that, the story of Sailor and Lula was subject to rather lukewarm receptions upon release, with a number of critics finding the film a bit too disjointed and potentially pointless. Its reputation, however, has only improved since and the film is now rightfully considered a true original. Not only that, in your writer's estimation, it is Lynch's fifth best.
