2008 marked a sea change in Hollywood's approach to movie-making, especially regarding superhero films. The genre was of course not new, and had multiple blockbuster successes in the past. But with the emergence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man debuted, and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight raking in hundreds of millions of dollars and garnering critical success, comic book movies were here to stay.

That same year, another comic book movie was made. Though Hellboy II: The Golden Army hasn't pervaded the cultural zeitgeist the way the more famous DC and Marvel superheroes have, del Toro's sequel to his own 2004 film is a great entry into the arena of comic book movies.

Perlman again shines as the heroic demon, and Selma Blair and Doug Jones return as his companions. And while there are still some stilted subplots that plagued other earlier del Toro works like the first Hellboy and Mimic (including an uninteresting pregnancy), Hellboy II brings all the fun an zaniness of the first film and ramps it up.

Most memorable is a scene in which small flying creatures- so-called tooth fairies, named for their preferred diet- attack our heroes. While most blockbuster set pieces involve gigantic duelers (including del Toro's own Pacific Rim), the ingenuity of having an epic battle with innumerable tiny creatures is a unique and exciting moment. Hellboy II is a comic story which should not be forgotten at the expense of the other powerhouse comic book franchises.
